Mr Bates Is A Hero

7 PMs, 19 PO Ministers, 5 PO CEOs, A major Japanese Company called Fujitsu, banks of PO investigators and prosecutors and the CPS ( in a minor role) all contrived to be guilty of, or complicit in, one of the biggest obfuscation, lies and cover up scandals since WW2.

The old saying goes, the pen is mightier than the sword, well the pen of whoever wrote the ITV4 Part doc-drama, Mr Bates v The Post Office certainly invoked the sword of Damocles upon the PO ……finally

You all know the story, heavens above it has created a veritable media frenzy since the ITV programmes aired, garnishing a huge wave of  public outrage along the way. Late yesterday evening BBC1, BBC2 and ubiquitous Peston on ITV were all simultaneously busy picking over the bones of the who, why, how!
Cracks starting to appear along from other quarters.

1.Paula Vennells has concluded  her CBE isn’t worth the trouble it’s causing her and has returned it.
2.Ed Davy is in hiding! A former sub post mistress ( as yet still convicted of fraud) is standing against him in the next GE.Were a GE to be held soon she would likely win, But the nation is fickle and memories are short lived.
3.It has emerged the CPS prosecuted a small number of the PO cases, a few on Slimy Starmer’s watch. He is keeping ‘schtumm on that particular issue but his fulsome support of the PM’s Despatches statement on the matter yesterday was bound to have been a clue that he might have been hiding something newsworthy!
4. One of the Fujitsu main architects of the Horizon IT System is prepared to spill his guts to the Select Committee Inquiry if granted immunity.
5. Several of  those sacked for fraud but not convicted in court are considering mounting a challenge to the £75k compensation.
6. At least 2 who WERE convicted in court are dissatisfied with the £600k offer and are likely to sue for closer to £1m.
7. And to rub salt in the PO’s wounds it seems The Met are beginning to sniff around them.

I was incensed over Hillsborough. I was incensed over the Stephen Lawrence scandal. I am incensed over this.

PS Mickey, JKW HAS responded to your request for an explanation of REMF. Because you signed off your post way down the pages accessing his response requires some scrolling down….quite a lot of scrolling. You’re Welcome.

It's all coming out now, but apart from the compensation & exoneration for those so wrongly accused ,I hope heads will roll (Starmer & Davy , oh yes please !) although we all know they'll slither their way out. Whilst I sincerely hope that ALL those so badly affected by the accusations get their just rewards, I am against the view that Mr Bates should be given a knighthood. He was instrumental in working his socks off to get justice, but a knighthood ?Plenty of other awards (OBE, BEM etc) would be justified IMO, & anyway, having seen the real Mr Bates (on TV), I don't believe he'd be comfortable with a knighthood. Imagine him rubbing shoulders with Davy and Starmer !?!

On a different tack, how come suspicions of the IT system were not suspected earlier - surely hundreds of postmasters / postmistresses, with previous excellent & loyal service, were suddenly "found" to be guilty of fraud - anyone with an ounce of common would think something was fishy & look "outside the box" at possible reasons for the discrepancies.     John (JKW)

The Japanese know how corrupt our society is and no doubt Fujitsu had "sponsored" certain big wigs in the PO and government. Hopeful it will be made public and prosecution will follow. Better still Persecution of the really guilty will follow, see how they like it!

Cliff

John, I think the ‘frauds’ were running at one a week for years and for ‘years’ it never struck anyone in the PO or Fujitsu that it was odd that so many long term, loyal, honest, hardworking sub post masters were suddenly queuing up to commit fraud…..as you say. Someone MUST have wondered, perhaps even knew and events just steam rolled on perhaps too far to call a halt to.

Cliff, there is a potential light at the end of the tunnel, the Japanese are big on honour and spilling their guts when caught out,  previously in history quite literally.
